Covington Man Sentenced to 59 Years for Bank Robbery and Kidnapping
U.S. Federal District Court Judge Danny Reeves sentenced 40 year old Joseph Weir, of Covington, to 59 years in prison for bank robbery, kidnapping, and firearms convictions handed down by juries in two trials. Weir was arrested by Covington Police Detective James West for robbing the Huntington Bank on Madison Avenue in December, 2011. After obtaining incriminating statements from Weir about the bank robbery, West then questioned Weir about the May, 2011, abduction of a 75 year old woman from the Crestview Hills Mall. Weir admitted his role in that crime as well. Under federal law, Weir must serve 85% of his sentence. Both cases started as prosecutions in the Kenton County Commonwealth’s Attorney Office but were referred to federal prosecutors because of stiffer sentences available in the federal system.
