Shaquil Wynn Indicted for Rape & Sodomy of Child
COVINGTON, Ky. — On Nov. 19, 2020, the Kenton County Grand Jury indicted Shaquil Wynn, 26, of Independence, for Rape Third Degree and Sodomy Third Degree. Each charge is a Class D felony carrying 1-5 years in prison and registration as a sexual offender. Wynn is scheduled for arraignment before Kenton Circuit Judge Patricia Summe on Nov. 30, 2020. He is currently out of jail on a $2,500 bond.
Wynn was arrested Sept. 17, 2020, on a warrant obtained by Independence Police Sgt. Joseph Moffett alleging he had intercourse and oral sex with a 15-year-old child at an Independence residence in September 2018. Evidence collected from the scene of the crime was sent to the Kentucky State Police Crime Lab for testing and was found to contain a mixture of DNA from Wynn and the child victim.
“Unfortunately, serious cases like this are delayed for months or even years due to underfunding and understaffing of the state’s crime labs,” Commonwealth’s Attorney Rob Sanders said. “It’s extremely important evidence and it’s incredibly unfortunate we have to wait so long for DNA testing.”
The prosecutor also said COVID-19 reductions in staffing have exacerbated an already backlogged system. “It’s rolling the dice with public safety when sex offenders are walking the streets because of delayed test results,” Sanders said.
