Accused Killer of Scott County Sheriffs Deputy Pleads Guilty In Kenton County Case
Earlier today, Steven Sheanshang pleaded guilty in Kenton Circuit Court to charges of 2nd Degree Burglary and 1st Degree Persistent Felony Offender. Commonwealth’s Attorney Rob Sanders refused to make any plea offers to Sheanshang and informed Kenton Circuit Judge Kathy Lape that he will recommend the maximum 20 year sentence. The judge ordered a pre-sentence investigation by the Kentucky Department of Corrections, and scheduled formal, final sentencing for June 10, 2024.
Scott County Sheriff’s Deputy Caleb Conley was shot and killed during a traffic stop on May 22, 2023. Sheanshang was identified as a suspect in the deputy’s Murder and his photos were widely circulated in the public media. Fort Mitchell Police Detective Jess Hamblin recognized Sheanshang’s photo as the suspect seen in security video from a home on Watch Hill Road in Kenton County. Det. Hamblin obtained a warrant for Sheanshang’s arrest the next day, charging him with 2nd Degree Burglary. The Kenton County Grand Jury added the 1st Degree Persistent Felony Offender charge when Sheanshang was indicted on June 8, 2023.
Sheanshang remains incarcerated in the Bourbon County Detention Center while awaiting trial on charges in Scott, Fayette, and Bourbon counties. He is presumed innocent of those charges until proven guilty in a court of law.
Commonwealth’s Attorney Sanders said “While our charges obviously are not as serious as those in Scott County, we know who Mr. Sheanshang is and we weren’t about to cut him any deals!” Sheanshang faces 10 to 20 years in prison in Kenton County with no parole for at least 10 years. “I have great faith in my fellow prosecutors handling his other cases, but this will be a little insurance policy so Kentuckians know he won’t be getting out any time soon no matter what happens in the other counties,” said Sanders.
